Firefighters from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) will join hundreds of firefighters from across New Zealand at the Sky Tower tomorrow for the Memorial Firefighter Stair Climb. The event marks 25 years since 9/11 and honours those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
New Zealand will be among the first countries to pay tribute as the world marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
“We continue to remember the New Zealand firefighters we have lost in the line of duty, alongside the FDNY firefighters who lost their lives while responding to the attacks on 9/11. Their courage and the way they put others first should never be forgotten. We’re proud to support the firefighters taking part as they climb the Sky Tower in their memory,” said Callum Mallett, SkyCity’s Chief Operating Officer.
Organised by FireUp Events, the Memorial Climb takes place each year on 11 September to honour every New Zealand firefighter lost in the line of duty since 1872. It also remembers the 343 FDNY firefighters who died while responding to the attacks on the World Trade Centre, the worst firefighter tragedy in recent history.
The event will also feature a memorial wall displaying photographs of fallen firefighters, a Fire and Emergency NZ haka, and vintage fire engines.
The ceremony will begin at 12 pm at SkyCity Plaza, with the climb starting around 1.25 pm. The event will be livestreamed on YouTube.
