SkyCity invites Aucklanders to help shape new city landmark

Skytower Day Highres (1)

SkyCity is inviting Aucklanders to help shape a new landmark at the base of the Sky Tower – a bold, large-scale AUCKLAND installation designed to become a permanent feature of the city and a new focal point for visitors and locals alike.

Standing two metres high and over 10 metres wide, the installation is made from fully welded aluminium, with each letter weighing around 600 kilograms.

Positioned in the heart of the SkyCity Auckland precinct, it is designed to become a focal point for locals and visitors, and a new meeting place in the central city.

Before the installation takes on its final form, SkyCity is offering the community the opportunity to be part of its creation.

Aucklanders are invited to design up to four of the eight letters in AUCKLAND, with each winning design featured on the installation during its launch period. The remaining letters will be offered to community partners. Entries are encouraged to reflect the city’s character, diversity, and identity.

SkyCity General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Caroline Ah Chong-Douglas, says the initiative is about creating something Aucklanders can connect with and take pride in.

“This is about giving Aucklanders something to call their own,” she says. “We wanted to create a landmark that reflects the energy, creativity and diversity of the city – something that resonates with the people who live here, as well as the many visitors who come through Auckland each year.”

Located alongside the Sky Tower and in close proximity to the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), the installation is expected to become a natural gathering point for the thousands of visitors and event delegates moving through the precinct.

“We see this as a continued evolution of the precinct and its role in welcoming the world to Auckland,” says Ah Chong-Douglas.

Design submissions are open now and close at 8am on Friday, 8 May. Entries can be submitted via the SkyCity website and by listening to the Breeze Auckland on 93.4FM and streaming on rova.

The eight winning designs will be revealed at an official unveiling event under the Sky Tower on 15 May. Each selected artist will receive a $250 SkyCity prize pack.

Following the initial display period, the installation will transition to its permanent finish.

The installation is intended to become a lasting feature of the Auckland landscape - a place to meet, connect and capture the spirit of the city.
