Han Meilin projects Chinese artwork onto the Sky Tower for Lunar New Year

SkyCity Auckland will mark the Lunar New Year with artwork by Chinese artist Han Meilin projected onto the Sky Tower to welcome the Year of the Horse.

As part of Sky Tower’s 2026 New Year celebration, the projection Ten Thousand Galloping Horses brings the spirit of the Year of the Horse to life through large-scale animated artworks. The curated projection showcases a series of horse-themed pieces that combine traditional cultural elements with contemporary visual design, reimagining the horse as a symbol of vitality, prosperity, and forward momentum.

Han Meilin, known for designing the 2008 Beijing Olympic mascots, is a prominent Chinese artist. His work, appearing on the Sky Tower on 16 and 17 February, typically from 8:00 pm, celebrates the Lunar New Year and acknowledges the Auckland Chinese community.

SkyCity’s GM Sales and Marketing, Caroline Ah Chong-Douglas says that SkyCity will host a wide variety of activities to celebrate the Year of the Horse.

“Many of our staff and guests celebrate Lunar New Year. It is important for us to recognise the festival in a way that reflects its cultural meaning. Next year will mark 30 years since SkyCity began celebrating Lunar New Year, and we love being part of cultural activities that bring people together.”

During the Lunar period, the Auckland Night Markets will return to the base of the Sky Tower, alongside entertainment including lion dance and panda dance performances, Chinese calligraphy with personalised messages, firecracker celebrations, and a photo booth where guests can print photos. The God of Fortune will also hand out red packets to guests.
