1102 firefighters from 279 brigades took part in the iconic Sky Tower climb last Saturday, marking the largest turnout in the event’s 22-year history.
Firefighters from New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and the Cook Islands climbed the tower wearing full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus weighing up to 25kg.
The fastest male time was recorded by Andy Tomlinson from Papakura Fire Station, who completed the climb in 8 minutes and 55 seconds. The fastest female time was recorded by Helen Sinclair from Christchurch Metro, who completed the climb in 12 minutes and 13 seconds.
“Year after year, the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge proves what is possible when a community rallies around a cause,” says Tim Edmonds, Blood Cancer NZ Chief Executive Officer.
“This year, our community of firefighters has helped us reach a record-breaking $2.5 million. These funds allow us to support patients, invest in research, and advocate for those affected by blood cancer.
“It’s a milestone built on more than two decades of commitment and the unwavering support of partners like SkyCity, who help make this event possible.”
The event was founded by Tony Scott, who has served in both the Northland and Auckland Airport Fire Rescue Services since 1988. SkyCity has hosted the challenge since the inaugural climb in 2005.
