Our Sky Tower: 20 years shining bright for Auckland

To celebrate 20 years of lighting for the community, SKYCITY is handing over the reins to the public for the first time for just three nights as part of the Sky Tower’s 20th birthday celebrations.

On 3, 4 & 5 August from 6pm-9pm, SKYCITY is inviting members of the public to the base of the Sky Tower to have their chance to select one of eight colours to light the top of the Tower for a special occasion, person, cause, or simply their favourite colour.

The Sky Tower has lit for more than 100 different reasons over the past 20 years.

From Mother’s Day to Matariki, Poppy Week to princesses, Christmas to Christchurch quakes, the Sky Tower has lit for more than 100 reasons in the past 20 years.

“From day one the Sky Tower’s lights have held a special place in the hearts of Aucklanders, lighting to raise awareness for causes close to our hearts, in solidarity or in shared grief, to celebrate success, to support Kiwi teams, and for our diverse community”, says John Mortensen, SKYCITY’s Chief Operating Officer.

“This is an exciting opportunity we’ve never offered before. This is an opportunity for the public to light for their special anniversary, proposal, or baby reveal, in support of their charitable cause or awareness day and to share that moment,” says Mr Mortensen.

The eight colour choices are orange, red, purple, blue, green, yellow, pink and a dynamic rainbow swirl. The colours will be selected on a touch screen and a second screen will show a live stream of the top of the Sky Tower lighting in the colour.

As part of the birthday celebrations, SKYCITY is offering New Zealand residents free entry on Thursday 3 August 2017! For those New Zealand residents who can’t visit on 3 August, there is a special offer of $20 for a Sky Tower admission pass for one adult and one child (6-14 years) for visits from 4 - 31 August. Both special offers require proof of address.
